4 Myths Busted About Your First Year in Business
There are a lot of myths out there about starting your own business.
And some of them might be true... for some people.
But I'm here to tell you that there are a few BIG ones I hear again and again in the online business world.
And it's time to put a stop to it!
Myth 1: You need a big audience
When you're starting out and offering 1:1 services or coaching, you do NOT need a huge audience.
You don't need thousands (or even hundreds) of IG followers or email subscribers. In fact, you don't even need an email list at all in the beginning.
What you DO need is to have conversations with people about what you do and how you can help.
This might look like your personal network - always a great place to start.
Facebook groups
Networking events (in-person or virtual)
A single conversation can lead to a client. And even if the person you're talking to doesn't need your services, they might know someone who does.
Myth 2: You need a niche
Ah, the great niche debate.
Here's the thing. At some point, a niche may help you narrow down your offers and marketing.
But you don't need to do it right away.
In the beginning, it can even be helpful to work with a lot of different types of clients.
This not only helps you build up experience and confidence, but you'll figure out who you actually want to work with (not just who you think you do).
Myth 3: You need to hustle and work super long, hard hours
☝ THIS scares so many people away from even trying.
You do NOT need to work full-time and overtime hours to create a successful business.
You don't need to squeeze work into every moment of the day and sacrifice the things that are most important to you.
That's just a recipe for burnout (and we're in this for the long haul).
It's your business, so you call the shots. You set your schedule. You decide how much work you can handle.
Consistency? Yes!
Overworking and exhaustion? No, thanks 👎
Myth 4: You need to feel 100% ready
Did you feel totally ready when you became a parent? Bought your first home? Started your last job?
Probably not.
I'm going to guess that life has thrown some things at you that you didn't feel prepared for.
And then you figured it out.
Your business is the same.
If you wait to feel ready, you'll be waiting forever.
So take the first step.
Just one.
Then, take the one after that.
You'll be amazed at what you achieve if you keep putting one foot in front of the other and tackling one thing at a time.
The key is to start before you're ready and just keep going.
